Wall of Wiggling Penises
Artist and designer Peiqi Su’s 3D printed 81 Wiggling Penises and fitted them with motors and an ultrasonic motion sensor and hacked them to respond to viewers’ movements or, brilliantly, to real time changes in the stock market, which is excellent satiric commentary on capitalism and masculinity.
The Wall of Wiggling Penises was her thesis project at NYU’s ITP graduate program and is hypnotically weird. It’s also a wall of robot penises waggling and flexing like some kind of Dali nightmare. Here’s video of the excellent, thought-provoking art project, taken by Instagram user Ronen V.
Peiqi’s previous projects have involved recreating other organic and bodily forms, from mushrooms to human hair.
“This is my initial motivation,” Peiqi explains in her statement, “to study one of the oldest and probably the most attractive thing that humans interact with.” The piece was on view only briefly, on May 19 and 20, as part of ITP’s spring exhibition showcasing student works, but The Penis Wall seems destined to pop up again soon.
