Poetry, The Spoken Herd and Sex toys
So YouOnlyWetter went for a staff night out to the legendary Poets evening that is the Hammer and Tongue Brighton this months was tied into the science festival, the themes of this year’s Brighton Science Festival are FAIRNESS and CONFLICT, in celebration of which they had a rather different style of slam this month, and first time i have heard sex toys used so many times in a rap 🙂
The evening started of with a Local Poet Yvo Luna a writer, performer and visual artist who has moved into using keynote presentations as a way of demonstrating her experiences and views related to social mores and mental health.
Next up was Keith Jarrett a Londoner who writes poetry and short fiction. He performed his [video_lightbox_youtube video_id=”lF-TM3DZtuo” width=”640″ height=”480″ anchor=” ‘Gay Poem’ “]After first performing some of his poetry in 2005, he won the London Slam Champion title in 2007 and was runner-up in the Radio 4 UK Slam Championships. In 2010, he simultaneously held the title of Farrago’s London and UK Poetry Slam Champion, and was a semi-finalist in the World Cup Grand Slam in Paris. Following this success, Keith was published on Warsaw’s ‘Poetry on the Underground’ Wiersze Metrze; he has also been interviewed in The Times and on the BBC, and featured on BBC 1Xtra’s documentary When Words Collide. He has hosted English and Spanish poetry showcases and co-ordinated festivals in schools in London and beyond. His extended poetry show, ‘Identity Mix-Up’ debuted in Edinburgh last year and received high praise. Keith is currently part of a Spoken Word Educators programme, teaching in a London secondary school and studying for an MA at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is writing his first novel.
Then the huge hit of the night and the inspiration for this blog The Spoken Herd.
The Spoken Herd is a Brighton-based group of rappers and musicians whose boundlessly inventive improvisation and propulsive energy is astounding to behold! The freestyle MCs will chew up your topics, questions and character nominations then spit them straight back at you, whilst lead vocalist Katie Evans terrorizes the chorus over their 7-piece band.
