While it can’t literally “break”—there’s no bone in your boner—your penis can rupture, says Erik P. Castle, M.D., a urologist at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. “Your penis has two encased sponges that sit next to each other and become engorged when you’re aroused. During vigorous sex, the outer lining can rip.” If you feel sudden pain, do not try to ride it out: You risk impotence or chronic deformity. Instead, head straight to an emergency room, where you’ll be treated to reduce swelling, eliminate any blood clots, and repair the damaged area, says Dr. Castle. Of course, it’s better to spare your rod in the first place.
How? Don’t bend it too far at the base. That’s why the woman-on-top position (conventional or reverse cowgirl) can be risky (but rewarding!); she can create excessive torque on your penis if she leans too far forward or back. The same risk exists with rear-entry vaginal intercourse.
